Arithmetic dynamics amalgamates two major branches of mathematics, number theory and dynamical systems. It studies number theoretic properties of points under repeated application (iteration) of various maps, such as polynomials or rational functions. Being a relatively new area, it partly draws inspiration from dynamical analogs of theorems and conjectures in arithmetic geometry. In this talk, I'll start by giving an introduction to the subject by presenting some motivating questions and results. I'll then talk about some irreducibility questions naturally arising from dynamics. Many concrete examples will be given throughout the talk.
